This GoodSync setup is not suitable for users who move between those OS's on a regular basis because you will need to rename the Documents folder. We are not using the “save past versions” and “save delete” options but they might be useful for others.ĮDIT: Please pay attention to my edit in step 11 regarding users moving between XP and Win7/Vista. Every 5 minutes seems to be the best solution for us. For a while I was using “on-file-change=sync” but it seemed to really slow things down for users who were connected via VPN. The sync/timing options we used here tell GoodSync to ensure that a sync occurs during logon and logoff and every 5 minutes during the session. Folder-links and file-links are set to “asis” to avoid some weird bug that causes shortcuts files to get deleted if the link is pointing to a shared drive that is disconnected.

The UAC prompt comes up because GoodSync will try to use VSS to sync locked files. Copy-locked is set to “no” so that users do not receive a UAC prompt for admin credentials when GoodSync tries to sync a file that is locked. The “include” is setup the way it is so that the script works for both XP and Windows 7 (and Vista) Microsoft’s sync frequently gave us problems with files not sync’ing properly (failing to sync, or sync conflicts that required user interaction, or just flat out not working for weird/random reasons.) GoodSync also allowed us to start sync’ing the user’s Desktop and Favorites folders, a functionality that you normally only get with Roaming Profiles (something we stopped using a long time ago) but without the headaches of Roaming Profiles.Ī couple notes about the command line options we used for GoodSync: file synchronization tool GoodSync is a file synchronization and backup tool that enables you to backup your files and/or synchronize them with another location such as a different drive, folder, USB drive, network location or various cloud storage accounts, including Amazon S3, Google Docs, SkyDrive and more.
#GOODSYNC FILE SYNCHRONIZATION OFFLINE#
This how-to explains how we configured GoodSync to replace the functionality that was provided by Microsoft’s built-in Offline Files synchronization and My Documents redirection.
